Behind Bars – the definitive guide to music notation is the indispensable reference book for composers, arrangers, teachers and students of composition, editors, and music processors.
It is no exaggeration to say that ‘Behind Bars – the definitive guide to music notation’ is the result of a life’s dedicated work. It took Elaine Gould over twenty years to painstakingly research and write.
This mammoth undertaking is a ” wonderful monster volume … is an extraordinary achievement … that will be a reference for musicians for decades to come” – Sir Simon Rattle.
First published in print back 2011 it is supported by 1,500 music examples of published scores from Bach to Xenakis. Faber Music had tried more than once to convert the print book into a reflowable ebook but found the lack of control of the page design and layout meant it was just not good enough to publish.
Now, the unique PDF tools in CircularFLO have made light work of converting this weighty 694 page book into a fully searchable ‘print replica’ fixed layout ebook. By using more CircularFLO tools to add a rich table of contents and tappable cross reference hyperlinks on the pages the result was finally what they were looking for.
“Using the CircularFLO software has allowed us to publish a fully searchable ebook to Amazon and Apple which has faithfully reproduced the complex musical notations directly from the print PDFs that are critical to this book. The ebook files look fantastic and we’re really pleased with it – the author is delighted!” – Catherine Walker – Digital Manager – Faber Music
Behind Bars ebook is now available as an ebook from Amazon and Apple and with the first 50 pages available as a free sample.
Our friends over at BookWidgets have recently added a 3D widget which allows you to spin and explore complex 3D shapes.
They say “There are tons of free (or inexpensive) models available online, or make your own with simple tools like SketchUp. Also for science subjects there are free models available on the Protein Data Bank website.”
Web code and widgets can be dropped into the page of your fix layout EPUB3 using CircularFLO. See more here.

CircularFLO, the ebook generation software from Circular Software Limited has recently been updated to version 7 and includes some exciting new features. In particular, the ability to automatically convert books into fixed layout EPUB 3 with “read-aloud” text highlighting. Circular Software has joined forces with Spanish technology company Sinkronigo to enable their tools to create automatic timestamping for audio synchronisation. The result is that lengthy pieces of content can be prepared quickly and with much greater ease. A quick demonstration of this feature can be viewed here on youtube. The user can easily convert any InDesign title to both KF8 and Fixed Layout EPUB 3 with audio, video, animation and read aloud.
This has proved to be particularly appropriate for children’s illustrated titles and language learning content for education and with the added possibility of using read-aloud highlights for images and graphics there are other genres where this option could be beneficial.
Version 7 includes the ability to bring interactive puzzles, games and quizzes to Fixed Layout EPUBs. Circular Software have collaborated with European technology group BookWidgets to develop this feature which requires no coding by the book designer. See youtube again for a useful demo. This update also allows publishers to instantly publish fixed layout EPUB 3 titles online, again without the need to write any code.
Founder and Director, Ken Jones, has recently conducted a #eprdctn hour on creating read aloud EPUBs and for further information on this and the rest of CircularFLO 7’s new features members should visit circularflo.com where they can trial this version for free (including the read-aloud tools). Ken is also hosting twitter’s #eprdctn hour on Wed 28th October where he will be discussing adding webcode and widgets to content.
National Trust Books are using CircularFLO to convert over 200 National Trust Guide books, one for each of their properties around the UK.
They now have a dedicated page on their website directing visitors to purchase their CircularFLO made guidebooks with Amazon, iBooks and Kobo.
Claire Masset, Guidebooks Publisher, National Trust – “Using CircularFLO allows us to convert our popular guidebooks in-house, quickly and easily into fixed layout e-books that don’t require any extra formatting or design. For backlist titles, being able to convert from print PDFs is fantastic.”
National Trust are a UK conservation charity, protecting historic places and green spaces, and opening them up for ever, for everyone. They are a membership organisation with over 4 million members.
BOOK PUBLISHERS GET NEW TOOLS TO ADD AUTOMATIC ‘READ-ALOUD’ TO FIXED LAYOUT EPUB3 EBOOKS WITHOUT CODING. Circular Software Limited today release CircularFLO 7, a major update to CircularFLO their flagship ebook generation software, now ready for free download from www.circularflo.com. A major new feature of this v7 release is the ability to automatically convert either new or existing print books into fixed layout EPUB3 ebooks with ‘read-aloud’ text highlighting. ‘Read-aloud’ ebooks use a technique called ‘media overlays’ to combine a professionally spoken audio track with accurate timing information in order to change the colour of words on the page in time with the spoken audio. Read-aloud ebooks are most popular with children’s illustrated fiction and for language learning education. It is important to note that this is NOT synthetic text-to-speech. Working with Spanish technology company Sinkronigo has allowed Circular Software developers to add new CircularFLO tools to create and prepare completely automatic timestamping for audio synchronisation using Adobe InDesign and CircularFLO 7. Long passages of text containing thousands of words running throughout the entire ebook can now be quickly prepared in one step. The CircularFLO read-aloud techniques also work with hand drawn and scanned artwork and more new tools can be used to add other independent audio clips and a background soundtrack. Tom Bonnick, business development manager of Nosy Crow – “Combining text-highlighting with hand-lettering, isn’t something that’s ever been done before – but we’re very pleased to say that we’ve found a way of doing it. Working with Circular Software’s CircularFLO technology, we’ve managed to produced a beautiful, unique edition.” Ken Jones, Founder and Director of Circular Software – “CircularFLO is the only tool to do read-aloud in this way. We have spoken to many people who have spent several days of their lives coding to achieve the same result that we can now do in under five minutes and with no coding required.” A short youtube video showing the auto timestamping features is available at bit.ly/PR2readaloud For further information contact: Ken Jones – +44(0)7974 458642 – email@example.com – @CircularKen -Ends- CircularFLO 7 (circularflo.com) from Circular Software is already used by self publishers and global publishers alike. Hachette, Pan Macmillan, and Penguin Random House all use CircularFLO in-house in the UK. Other tools are available to easily add audio, video and animations and then to produce beautiful and interactive ebooks for Amazon, Apple, Kobo, Google Play with no coding required. CircularFLO is free to download and trial from www.circularflo.com. Full ebook conversions are then carried out by the user in minutes after purchasing a credit per book. Conversions start from $99 / £69 per ebook produced. This conversion price includes both EPUB3 and Amazon KF8 files and the ability to instantly publish the ebook online. Sinkronigo (sinkronigo.com) provide a SaaS API to align text and audio using a proprietary technology solution to give very accurate alignment in a short time in the majority western languages. Completely automatic tools in CircularFLO 7 now allow publishers to use this service to add word, line, paragraph and even image highlighting along with a recorded spoken track
CircularFLO 7 makes it easy to add interactive puzzles, quizzes and games to your ebook pages with no coding required. We’ve been working hard with BookWidgets who offer an impressive catalogue of interactive widgets includes various quizzes, jigsaws, flashcards, crosswords and maths puzzles.
New tools in CircularFLO 7 mean that, for the first time ever, interactive widgets can now be dropped onto any page of your InDesign document and then exported out to a valid fixed layout EPUB3.
How does it work?
BookWidgets provide an easy-to-use application to create, customise and export widgets with no coding required. The placing of the widgets and then the positioning and scaling is automatically taken care of with our free CircularFLO tools.
Just like any regular image link you are free to edit and update the widget files outside of InDesign. The latest up-to-date version of the linked files will be then be incorporated into your ebook with CircularFLO.
More information on pricing and full instructions are now available on our instructions page.
When a backlist print book suddenly becomes topical again how can you get it quickly on sale with Amazon and Apple?
Clangers: Make the Clangers and their planet with 15 easy step-by-step projects was originally set in QuarkXPress a few years ago but has recently become popular again due to a remake of an old Children’s TV series here in the UK.
The CircularFLO tools made it easy to convert this backlist book into a beautiful ebook with no coding required. Every step necessary, from downloading CircularFLO app and using the free tools included for placing PDFs onto the page, adding table of content and hyperlinks to finally exporting the final fixed layout EPUB3 and KF8 was completed in-house and on the same day. Then distribution partners Faber Factory had the book on sale with Amazon shortly after.
Any UK publishers who wish to use CircularFLO to bring their backlist titles to the ebook format with CircularFLO and Faber Factory should contact us for more details.
The ‘Make the Clangers’ ebook, made with CircularFLO, is now available on Amazon and coming to the Apple iBook Store soon.
Pan Macmillan have been using CircularFLO to convert their illustrated books to Amazon KF8 and fixed layout EPUB3 since 2013 but The Giant of Jum is the first of their CircularFLO created EPUBs which contains read aloud text highlighting.
The CircularFLO users at Pan Macmillan prepared their pages using the free Read Aloud Tools to match the text highlighting along with the narration by actor Stephen Mangan. CircularFLO is unique in that it allows the preparation of read aloud ebooks quickly and easily, without leaving InDesign and with no coding required.
It is a cool book or as their press release puts it – An incredible rhyming text read aloud by actor Stephen Mangan, and a brilliant, big-hearted twist on a classic fairy tale, The Giant of Jum sees the start of a new partnership from uniquely talented author and poet, Elli Woollard, and award-winning illustrator, Benji Davies.
A new fixed layout EPUB3 example document has been created to showcase some cool examples of placed web code – one of the latest features of CircularFLO.
Because EPUB3 is based on the latest web standards including HTML5 and CSS3 it means that pieces of self contained web code from tools such as Tumult Hype or Adobe Edge or virtually anywhere else can be dropped on to a page in InDesign using the free CircularFLO Web Code tools. CircularFLO then handles the scaling on the page and takes care of building everything into the final valid fixed layout EPUB3.
This example contains a sortable table, panoramic photography, a scrolling live text panel, complex animations and interactive puzzles and is working well in iBooks and Readium.
Download and open this web code example EPUB now to your desktop or directly to a device from here.
Adobe have today announced an update to their page layout application Adobe InDesign to Adobe InDesign CC 2015.
As usual there are some relatively small but cool new features included. Before installing please be aware if you wish to run earlier version of InDesign you now have to make the positive choice to keep them.
Here at Circular Software we are committed to continuing our support for Adobe InDesign CS6 and all later versions of InDesign. Many of our large publisher customers in the UK are using InDesign CS6 and we try hard to make sure all the latest features are compatible with InDesign CS6.
CircularFLO users should update to our latest version to continue using CircularFLO with Adobe InDesign CC 2015.
Adobe have just announced and released Adobe Digital Editions 4 (ADE) for the iPad. This is a small but significant landmark for publishers wishing to bypass retailers and to sell their own ebooks directly to readers on the iPad.
I have been a prerelease tester for both ADE desktop and the new ADE iOS app on the iPad and am impressed with the amount of the fixed layout EPUB3 feature set that ADE 4 now supports.
As with the latest desktop version of ADE, ADE for iOS supports:
Double page spread fixed layout EPUB3 support
Obfuscated font support
Read aloud text and image highlighting
Tap audio, although the ADE chrome can have a tendency to come up when tapping
Embedded video which can zoom to full screen
Table of Content
Dictionary lookups (after downloading a dictionary in app)
Also included are a couple of extras that are not included with Apple iBooks, such as:
a neat feature to add highlights and notes are now available for fixed layout
a curious statistics feature which displays how long you have been reading a particular book and also all books as a whole.
There may well be a few minor improvements coming in an update soon as in this first public release tappable hyperlinks to URLs and pages was not working as expected, selecting objects on the right page of a spread was not working and I have experienced a few crashes when viewing this sample fixed layout EPUB3.
Why would we need a new ebook reader on the iPad?
The short answer is that ADE supports Adobe DRM (Data Rights Management). With a single Adobe login EPUBs can be sold to readers read to purchasers but sharing can be restricted.
The list of features for ADE is good (most are sadly lacking from many ebook readers from big tech companies such as Google and Amazon) but the other differentiating feature is that Adobe do not sell ebooks (although they do make a small charge for applying Adobe DRM to the books). This tool is a direct link between the publisher and their reader with the option of adding DRM.
I’ll leave the debate over whether DRM overall is a good or bad idea to others but in my experience when publishers have spent considerable amounts of time, effort and money creating their books and they are not ready to allow their ebooks to be shared without control. I see their point.
PDFs and EPUBs without DRM can also be read using ADE.
Applying Adobe DRM
Whilst the largest publishers might already be able to add Adobe DRM using Adobe Content Server, smaller publishers have the option of services offered by the likes of Bluefire in US and Firsty Group in the UK which help publishers add Adobe DRM to their own content and to host their own online ebook stores.
For niche and self publishers, Edition Guard also offer a scalable Adobe DRM solution.
CircularFLO users should take the latest free download to produce their beautiful and interactive ebooks as fixed layout EPUB3 and so be ready publish to directly to the iPad in this new way with Adobe Digital Editions for iOS.
With the new Web Code tools in CircularFLO v6 it’s now easy to add your own bits of extra web code to your fixed layout EPUB3 pages. This is a great feature for those who are looking to add extra interactions or more complex animations to their fixed layout EPUBs from CircularFLO.
The video here is just one example of how a user has added web code to give more interactivity to include a panoramic slideshow. With the gyro on the iPad the panoramic photo can be looked around simply by moving the iPad.
How does it work?
You don’t have to be a coder to create extra web code. CircularFLO will support code made by third party tools such as Tumult Hype, Adobe Edge Animate or virtually any other source.
Placing the code and scaling is automatically taken care of and just like a regular image link you are free to edit the code files outside of InDesign. The latest up-to-date version of the linked files will be incorporated into the ebook.
“Combining text-highlighting with hand-lettering … as far as we know, isn’t something that’s ever been done before – but we’re very pleased to say that we’ve found a way of doing it. Working with Circular Software’s CircularFLO technology, we’ve managed to produced a beautiful, unique edition.”
CircularFLO now makes it easy to add audio files to pages and then choose to highlight individual words and even images without coding and without leaving InDesign.
The free Read Aloud tools offered in CircularFLO can be used to add words from text frames or text on a path on the live text layer for the current page to the CircularFLO Read Aloud Panel.
Read Aloud highlighting can also be added for embedded text, without font restrictions, where each word will be separated into an individual object on the page and added to the read aloud table.
After the text and images are prepared in this way the audio track is added the timings are added by simply tapping the down arrow on the keyboard at the start of each new word.
To visualise the timings of word highlighting click the ‘Preview Read Aloud playback’ to hear the audio played back and see the panel rows selected in time and when you are happy with your timings for the page, you are done. Everything is now ready for CircularFLO to generate fixed layout EPUB3 with read aloud text highlighting.
Use the new PDF Tools panel in CircularFLO v6 to bring PDF pages into InDesign for use in your CircularFLO eBooks. Quickly and easily bring your backlist content and books which have not been made using InDesign (e.g. QuarkXPress or iBooks Author) and then export to Amazon KF8 and fully valid Fixed Layout EPUB3 for Apple, Kobo, Google Play and more.
Any bleed areas and trim marks are automatically cropped off on import meaning that existing print PDFs can be quickly repurposed as eBook content.
PDFs are placed into new pages which you can then export straight away or mix more InDesign content and other CircularFLO layers containing hyperlinks, animations etc. with your PDF artworks as required.
Of course working with PDF files means there is no need to find all links or to activate fonts before being able to make your beautiful fixed layout ebooks. Also there is no restrictions on the fonts that can be used.
Most print PDFs contain live text and whenever this is the case CircularFLO is able to pull all live text from the PDF into the InDesign document ready for it be added as embedded text for search.
To support the launch of Version 6 we’ve got 3 brand new webinars for you, to help guide you through the key new features.
All webinars are free to attend.
“Sometimes people just assume that the process will be much harder than it actually is! I have found that once people see our tools in action they really want to try them for themselves and to tell others.”

A small landmark event happened for Circular Software recently when the one thousandth ebook was made by a CircularFLO customer.
The book conversion ‘Mr Benn Diver’ was recently made by an in-house Mac user at Hachette Children’s Group in the UK.
Ken Jones – Director at Circular Software – “Anyone of a certain age in the UK will fondly remember Mr Benn as a much-loved classic children’s character of the 1970s and we are proud to be able to help him find a new audience in a new century! This book doesn’t contain animation, read aloud or other interactivity and it doesn’t contain audio or video. Although CircularFLO offers all of these features where it is required the fact is that CircularFLO is giving our customers a quick and affordable route to Amazon, Apple, Kobo and Google Play for simply written and beautifully illustrated books such as this and a thousand others.”
Mr Benn Diver is expected for release on 2 July 2015 from Amazon, iBooks Store and others. A free sample is now available from the iBooks Store.
Following the recent release of CircularFLO v5 we asked an expert on epublishing, Pariah Burke, to write a white paper comparing the latest InDesign version with what is possible using CircularFLO v5. We were delighted to read his honest account which included the
